Description
Ayutthaya: The Ancient Capital of Siam
UNESCO-listed ruins.
Drive from Bangkok - 1 hour 15 minutes.
On the program:
Bang Pa-In, the Royal Summer Residence
An unexpected place: Thai pavilions stand next to European palaces and Chinese halls, each king adding something unique. A great way to start the day before the heat sets in.
Wat Mahathat
A temple known only from a single photograph: the head of a Buddha statue embedded in the roots of a tree. No one knows exactly how it got there. It's worth seeing in person, as photographs don't do it justice.
Wat Mongkol Bophit
The best-preserved temple in the complex: tall stupas, long rows of stone Buddha statues, and one of the largest bronze statues in Thailand inside.
Wat Si Sanphet
A former royal temple, three white stupas in a row have become the symbol of Ayutthaya. The ashes of the kings of the Ayutthaya dynasty were kept here.
Wat Chaiwattanaram
A riverside temple with a central tower and galleries of statues. Films such as "Mortal Kombat" and "Kickboxer" were filmed here, and it's one of the most photogenic locations in Thailand.
